Dr. Ronald Triolo Inducted into AIMBE College of Fellows

Shire and TylerCleveland, Ohio—Dr. Ronald Triolo, Executive Director of the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center of Excellence of the Department of Veterans Affairs and Professor of Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), was appointed to the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) as announced at the Induction Ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2014. Four other faculty members from CWRU were also named AIMBE Fellows this year: Drs. Erin Lavik, James Basilion and Zheng-Rong Lu from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Ozan Akkus from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Fellows are nominated each year for membership by other AIMBE Fellows and peer-reviewed by the College of Fellows Selection Committee. Election to the College of Fellows includes individuals in the top 2% (approximately 1,500) of the most accomplished and distinguished medical and biological engineers nationally and internationally. These leaders in the field have distinguished themselves through their contributions in research, industrial practice and/or education. Only approximately 100 new Fellows were selected for induction into the AIMBE in 2014.

Dr. Triolo was selected for outstanding contributions to the design, implementation and assessment of neuroprostheses and assistive technologies that enhance mobility after neuromuscular disability. He is currently a VA Senior Research Career Scientist (SRCS) at the Louis Stokes Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (LSDVAMC) in Cleveland, Ohio where he maintains a dynamic research program with independent funding from the VA, NIH and Department of Defense dedicated to developing new methods to interact with the nervous system and external devices in order to improve or restore standing, standing balance, walking, seated posture and manual wheelchair propulsion to individuals with various forms of paralysis. His work and that of his dedicated multidisciplinary team of engineers, clinicians and researchers have resulted in over 115 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters.

About the APT Center: The APT Center is one of 17 designated Centers of Excellence in the Rehabilitation Research and Development (RR&D) Service of the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Established in 2005, the APT Center focuses on applying the most recent advancements in microelectronics, material science, microfabrication, wireless communication and mechanical design to the pressing medical needs of disabled veterans, and translating them into viable clinical options. Investigators, project staff and support specialists associated with the Center concentrate their professional effort on translational research in the areas of: Prosthetics and Orthotics, Health Monitoring and Maintenance, Neural Interfacing, and Emerging Enabling Technologies. Clinician-researchers associated with the Center include some of the “Best Doctors in America” as named by Cleveland Magazine and Best Doctors, Inc. as well as multiple recipients of prestigious Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the NIH Director’s Innovation Award, and VA Career or Senior Career Research Scientist Awards. APT Center related activities have resulted in more than 60 invention disclosures and 15 patented or patent-pending concepts and prototypes that will serve the clinical needs of veterans with sensory, motor and cognitive deficits or limb loss.
