Changyong Cao, PhD

Research interests

Dr. Changyong (Chase) Cao is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), directing the Laboratory for Soft Machines and Electronics (SME). He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science from the Australian National University (ANU) and completed his postdoctoral training in Mechanical Engineering & Electrical Engineering at Duke University. Before joining CWRU, he was a faculty at Michigan State University. Dr. Cao’s research interests include soft (active) materials, soft robotics, self-powered electronic systems, and 3D/4D printing of multifunctional materials. He has published over 65 scientific papers in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Biotechnology, Matter, Advanced Materials, Soft Robotics, Advanced Functional Materials, and Extreme Mechanics Letter. He also holds 4 US patents and a few pending patents. His research has been funded by NSF, DOE, USDA, US-DOT, and MEDC. Dr. Cao is the Associate Editor of IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters and Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering, and serves as an editorial member of several international journals: Advanced Electronic Materials, Frontiers in Robotics and AI, Soft Science, Forces in Mechanics, and Micromachines. He is a member of ASME, SES, MRS, IEEE, USACM, and ACS.
