Glenn Wera, MD
Most recently, Dr. Wera is pursuing the diagnostic challenge of infection versus inflammation of both native and peri-prosthetic joints. A wide variety of tests attempt to assay markers of inflammation such as interleukins, and differential of leukocytes and their byproducts. An unique approach may allow the ability to quantify the presence of CD8+ cytotoxic T cells which offer the potential of a highly specific and virtually instantaneous marker of infection as opposed to inflammation. The clinical utility of this research stems from potential cost savings and on-site or even bedside confirmation of peri-prosthetic infection.
