Overview

Team Cleveland won gold in the first ever Cybathlon that was held in Zurich, Switzerland on October 8, 2016!

Team Cleveland competes in the Functional Electrical Stimulation Bike Race. In this competition, pilots with complete spinal cord injuries (SCI) are equipped with implanted neural stimulation systems that enable them to pedal a cycling device for 750m on a circular race track.

About the Cybathlon

The Cybathlon is an international championship for pilots (individuals with disabilities) who are using advanced assistive devices including robotic technologies. The competitions are comprised of different disciplines that apply the most modern powered knee prostheses, wearable arm prostheses, powered exoskeletons, powered wheelchairs, electrically stimulated muscles, and novel brain-computer interfaces. The main goal of the Cybathlon is to provide a platform for the development of novel assistive technologies that are useful for daily life. The first ever Cybathlon was held at the Swiss Arena, Kloten, Zurich, Switzerland on October 8, 2016. The next Cybathlon will be held in the same location, May 2-3, 2020.

Team Cleveland

Team Cleveland (OH) is comprised of pilots (individuals with spinal cord injuries), researchers and staff at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center (APT Center and FES Center), Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, and MetroHealth Medical Center. Team Cleveland is led by Ron Triolo, PhD, Executive Director of the Advanced Platform Technology Center who has over 25 years of experience in the design, development, and clinical testing of motor system neuroprostheses, as well as in the design and evaluation of myoelectrically controlled above-knee limb prostheses.
