Enabling Technologies

CAREN SystemFor rehabilitation technology to fully impact the health, independence and societal participation of persons with physical disabilities requires the creation of new tools and techniques for seamlessly interfacing with the body and manipulating its underlying biological processes to extract information and exert control over organ and nervous system function. This program area addresses some of the major challenges to fully integrating technology with the body by taking advantage of new developments in material science, flexible microelectronics, and micro/nanotechnology to reinvent rehabilitation. Projects are directed toward creating the technical building blocks and scientific knowledge that will enable treatments and high impact interventions that would otherwise be impossible with existing technologies.
